DEANNA EVERSON, GINGER SALON, NW+NE PORTLAND.

MOST PEOPLE HAVE A PRETTY INTERESTING STORY ABOUT HOW THEY GOT INTO THE HAIR INDUSTRY, BUT I HAVE TO SAY, THIS ONE IS A TOP 5 CONTENDER .  After receiving a degree in Psychology at PSU, Deanna Everson was relegated to working at Kitchen Kaboodle.  Sporting an inaccurate bang, she decided to pop into Phagan’s hair school, where she quickly realized these kids would make more money than she did with her degree.  Off to beauty school she went.

Deanna has a very strong and interesting business concept – she just opened her second space on NE Fremont, and is planning to have her trademark ’boutique’ location at every corner of Portland.  She calls them micro salons, and enjoys the idea of a client paying for 100% of the stylist’s time.  She feels it gives a better business perspective, and keeps clients tied to their stylists and not the salon.

‘I understand that to be a good hairstylist one has to become an artisan.  I am being commissioned by the client to create a work of art on their head under their guidelines.  I try my hardest not to spin it so I am doing what I want.  I want the client to leave with their hair vision.’  I would have to assume that even if Miss Everson made a mess of all of her clients’ hair that they would still come to her, as her personality draws you in, she is highly intelligent and funny.

She also has from time to time represented Sidlab, most recently having done it at the Sustainable Fashion Show, and believes Sidlab to be 100% better than Bumble and Bumble.  ’Sidlab is the Portland Hippy version of Bumble – parabin and sulfate free.  I am a Portland native hippy at heart, and I love coloring to show off a haircut, and natural hair.  And since I am a natural red head I seriously kick ass at long lasting red hair color.  No joke.  I would consider myself the best red hair color stylist ever.  Well, last week maybe.’

No matter where you live, or what you do, there is bound to be someone you know you are supposed to be in awe of in your industry- someone to which you know you have seen their name but can’t quite remember exactly where, or maybe it seems to be everywhere – but you know they must be unique at what they do.

Meeting Miss Avenetti far surpassed the expectations I had already developed for her, already realizing via our email interactions and her humorous facebook status updates that this was a person I needed to meet. She was far more statuesque in person then I thought her to be, but the abundance of coolness that eminated from her was refreshing.

At 26 years of age she has already accomplished a lot, not only by age, but also by Portland standards. Bust (cover featuring Beth Ditto  >http://www.bustboobtique.com/product_info.php?products_id=286), Diva >http://blog.keelienicole.com/2007/12/diva-magazine-shoot/ , Oregon Bride, Portland Monthly, and The Changing Room have all featured her work. I find the most remarkable part of her success to be that she has done it all on her own merits by way of personality and talent. She halted her salon work to focus full-time on photo shoots. A trained hairdresser, she realized that in Portland more work could be attained if she were to be multi-faceted, so she threw make-up into her repertoire bag.

Needing to scratch her itch for salon energy, Miss Avenetti, after a two year salon haitus as well as an exhaustive search, landed at Grace Hair Salon in the Pearl District. Owner Thad Grace knew that Avenetti would be a wise addition to the team, being able to have her link the editorial world with his new MADA >http://www.madahair.com/ line.  “I was starting to feel like there wasn’t a place for me in my industry – usually you have to do apprentice programs but I had already done that at Richard Herrera’s> http://www.richardherrera.com/ . Thad gets it – happy employees.  He gives me the room to pursue my editorial work as well as be in the salon.  It is a balance I wasn’t finding other salons to be flexible with.”

Lindsey can be found at Grace Hair Salon> http://www.gracehairsalon.com/

Fridays and Saturdays, and is available for cocktails or other editorial endeavors the rest of the week.

BROW BETTY, TIGARD (BRIDGEPORT VILLAGE.)

AS A BUSINESS OWNER, I CAN SMELL A RAT FROM A MILE AWAY. CONVERSELY, IT HAS ALSO HONED MY SNIFFER TO PICK UP THE SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS. I just cannot express my deep affection for this intoxicating little space. I first was greeted by the nicest, most eloquently accessorized little lady at the front desk, Mercedes, and I know if she were to pull that ponytail out she would have the most fabulous of fro’s. (I will never stop judging people by their hair, and women with fro’s are always to be trusted.) Super nice. I was led into the back area by Hallie who, in my ten plus years of being in this industry, gave a full on brow consultation for the very first time. Neet-o! It’s always a treat to feel virginal past a certain age. I was so relaxed I almost fell asleep, and right before I slipped into a dream-like state I was done – with, wait for it……thicker and more full brows than when I arrived! You see, as we age we start losing it – our wits, our hair, our elasticity…..so to be able to put some of that back with something as simple as a wax, well, I am sold sister.

Jackie Mans, owner of Brow Betty, spent her childhood in Lake Oswego, moved to LA in her elder years, and came back to open her business in December, a mere week before the highly dramatized winter storm of ’08. She has seen people in Cali be successful at similar business models and decided to bring it here. A smart one, that Jackie, she spent a year doing what business people call ‘market research’ going around to several different establishments to get a feel for the perfect brow. She settled on those that had the trainings of the Anastasia brand http://www.anastasia.net/ as being the most exemplary of shapes, and next settled on a location – choosing where there was parking, freeway access, and of course, Portland’s busiest Jamba Juice. Filling out her roster of well trained betties, and using her husband’s financial acumen, this business is set up for success – and any business that delivers a great product deserves your money – trust me, it is worth the drive!

Make sure to check out and ask about all of their products… http://www.browbetty.com/Products.html psst..they have hot pink color for down there!
