LET’S GET TECHNICAL, SHALL WE?
USING A NEWFOUND TECHNOLOGY FROM AN INGREDIENT FOUND IN LANOLIN AND THEN BLENDED WITH NINE ESSENTIAL OILS AND EXTRACTS FROM THE AUSTRALIAN RAINFOREST, KEVIN MURPHY PRODUCTS HAVE AN ENTIRE LINE DEDICATED THE HAIR FROM HEAT. The KEVIN.MURPHY X-HP Complex is a blend of natural ingredients that are used in the treatment of burns. They are packed with antioxidants, essential oils, and amino acids that are essential for the repair of damaged hair.
TO DATE, THERE HAVE BEEN VERY FEW TECHNIQUES THAT CAN QUANTITATIVELY ANALYZE THE SURFACE OF HAIR FIBER. THE ADVANTAGE OF NEW 3D IMAGING TECHNIQUES IS THAT THE QUANTITATIVE ASSESSMENT OF THE AMOUNT OF DAMAGE TO THE SURFACE OF HAIR FIBER CAN BE MADE. MeX 3D imaging software is used to produce three dimensional reconstructions from multiple two-dimensional SEM images, in which surface roughness profiles can then be obtained and individual scale heights measured.
Thermal styling raises the cuticle on hair fibers, creating friction between the strands. This increases the force required to pull a comb through the hair, making combing more difficult. KEVIN.MURPHY HAIR CARE PRODUCTS X-HP Complex and other products claiming heat protection were tested using the Mini Tensile Tester to assess their effectiveness at reducing the combing forces when compared to a basic spritz. The change in force before and after straightening provides an indication of heat protection properties of the products.
The results have been expressed as the average percentage increase in total work required to comb the tress.
CHANGE IN TOTAL COMBING FORCE:
Basic Spritz 140% SodiumPolystyreneSulfonate 130%
PVP/DMAPAAxrylates Copolymer 90% KEVIN.MURPHY X-HP 55%
FLEXABRASION STUDY
The damage inflicted on hair by intense heat styling can be expected to reduce the overall strength of the hair. Flexabrasion studies were carried out to assess the changes in strength of hair treated with the different heat protection products. KEVIN.MURPHY HAIR CARE’S X-HP COMPLEX protects the hair with no significant decrease in hair strength after straightening, unlike the basic spritz and the competitive products in which significant loss was observed.
